An opera of silence and untamed forces

Kaija Saariaho’s first composition for the stage, Study for Life, was performed only once in February 1981.  Now a new generation of artists is giving her cryptic first step towards opera a fresh interpretation by combining it with the stage version of the violin concerto Graal Théâtre.

Composers Sebastian Hilli and Matias Vestergård with their poetic sound visions also represent the new generation. Four works come together to create a poignant world premiere, an opera of silence and untamed forces.

#Between

Idea and action, mind and body, music and theatre – unexpected and dizzying spaces unravel at the nameless crossroads of these dualities. We follow a character roaming through a world of devastation, guided beyond the curtain of reality by words, sound and imagery.

An evening of music theatre

The music theatre group La Chambre aux échos who brought us the world premiere Violences in 2019  returns to Almi Hall at the Finnish National Opera, delivering a new adventure for the senses.

From darkness to light

“You can perceive Between as a gradual rise towards light. An arc is born, which grows little by little. First, there’s just the electronics and the soprano, and you end up with the violin concerto. Every work adds something new to this chain,” conductor Clément Mao-Takacs explains.
