The Finnish National Ballet debuted with Swan Lake in 1922

The ballet group of the Finnish Opera was established at the Alexander Theatre in Helsinki in 1922, just over four years after Finland gained independence. The first performance on 17 January 1922 was Swan Lake, which the ballet master of the new group, George Gé, had discovered in St. Petersburg before the revolution. Finland had the privilege to see Swan Lake performed by a native ballet group before any other Western European country.

The Finnish National Opera embraced ballet permanently, building its international reputation on several tours after the two World Wars. The genre was introduced around Finland during ballet dancers’ summer tours in the 1950s. The group adopted the name Finnish National Ballet in the 1970s. Today it represents an equal half of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.
