King Oedipus attempts to escape his destiny, but everyone has to face their fate. Igor Stravinsky’s interpretation of this ancient tragedy is a masterpiece of rare intensity.
In the 1920s, Stravinsky had decided to leave colourful and loud ballets behind him. Striving for a new sense of clarity, he created the imposing, majestically resonating Oedipus Rex, which has been performed as both an oratorio and an opera over time. Oedipus Rex, which was last seen at the Finnish National Opera in 1963, is a rare treat for Finnish audiences. In 2019, it will be revived by the Orchestra of the FNO and a male chorus.
