A storm is rising

Benjamin Britten’s monumental opera is a tribute to the sea and a remarkable psychological drama. Peter Grimes highlights how an ordinary agitated community can turn against a dissimilar individual. It’s happened throughout history and it will happen again. That is the curse of human nature.

The realistic production takes the audience to a small English village, by the turbulent waves of the sea.

Recommended for children over the age of 12.

The British composer Benjamin Britten has created a wealth of acclaimed vocal music. The power of Peter Grimes (1945), his breakthrough opera, arises from the thunder of the orchestra and the roar of the large chorus.

”Even if an individual has morals, a crowd doesn’t. A crowd is controlled by its collective subconscious, which is constantly searching for the next target for its suppressed aggression. A certain group or individual will always provide an outlet for the distress. This explains the greatest tragedies in the history of humanity.”

– Director David Radok

Synopsis

Fisherman Peter Grimes’s young apprentice has died at sea. The court rules that the incident was an accident, but Grimes is advised not to take another apprentice. He is relieved by the court, but still guilty in the eyes of the villagers.

Though ostracised by the community, Grimes doesn’t want to leave the small fishing village. He wants to stay where his roots are, earn back the villagers’ respect, and marry Ellen, the woman he loves. Soon he recruits a new apprentice.

It doesn’t take long for another tragedy to unfold. Grimes has opened a hatch to the ship in his house, and the boy falls in. The villages are furious and blame Grimes for yet another boy’s death, while Ellen tries to protect him. The sea captain tells Grimes he should sail out in his ship and drown himself.

As the morning breaks, the town slowly comes alive again. The judge, Swallow, announces that a ship is sinking out at sea. No one says or does anything. A new day begins.
