A concert of ancient tragedies

The majestic tragedies of ancient Greece inspired Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky to compose some of the best works of their respective genres. Now an orchestral version of Strauss’s opera Elektra and Stravinsky’s oratorio Oedipus Rex will be performed together in one monumental concert conducted by Eivind Gullberg Jensen.

We recommend the concert to people over 9 years of age.

Ekaterina Gubanova as Iokaste

The FNO audience have the opportunity to hear one of the most successful mezzo-sopranos of her generation in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex oratorio. Russian-born Ekaterina Gubanova, who studied at Sibelius Academy in Finland, will sing the role of Iokaste.

Richard Strauss: Elektra

110 years ago, the audience of Strauss’s opera Elektra was taken aback by the passionate singing and the striking, forceful tone of the orchestra. The new orchestra version of Elektra is an avalanche of sound, which packs the most arresting parts of the opera into a compact and commanding whole.

Igor Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex

King Oedipus tries to avoid the path laid out for him – but no one can escape fate. The combination of Igor Stravinsky’s music and the ancient tragedy is one of the most powerful works of its genre.

In the 1920s, Stravinsky had moved away from colourful and loud ballets. Instead, he was searching for a new sense of clarity. Oedipus Rex is a grand, imposing work, which has been performed as both an oratory and an opera. This masterpiece, last produced at the Finnish National Opera in 1963, has been a rare treat in Finland. In the concert, it will be interpreted by top soloists, the Orchestra of the FNOB, and a male chorus.
