Three dance works in one evening

Triple Bill at the Finnish National Ballet will be a triple treat by three world renowned choreographers. British Wayne McGregor is one of today’s most internationally respected choreographers, while George Balanchine has been styled as the father of American ballet and a pioneer of neoclassical ballet. In addition to his dance works, Jerome Robbins’s merits include creating the choreography for the film West Side Story.

Recommended for children over the age of 7.

Emotions under the surface

Infra showcases life under the surface of a city – quite literally, as the dancing takes place underneath a work of art by British artist Julian Opie. The production for 12 dancers comprises solos, duets and group scenes, which explore human interaction – the feelings that we keep secret from the people around us. The soundscape of this emotionally affecting ballet combines the beautiful and melancholy music by Max Richter with electronic music and the sounds of everyday life.

Wayne McGregor is one of the world’s most highly respected contemporary dance choreographers. Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet in London, he has also collaborated with several leading ballet companies, including the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. In addition to this, McGregor has directed movement for films, such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Infra was originally commissioned by The Royal Ballet. The Royal Danish Ballet has rented production to FNB.

Serenade

Serenade

George Balanchine – Peter tchaikovsky

A landmark of neoclassical ballet

George Balanchine may be considered the world’s most important choreographer of neoclassical dance. Serenade, which had its world premiere in 1934, was one of the landmarks of his career. It was the first work Balanchine created after his emigration from the Soviet Union to initially Western Europe and finally the United States. Serenade also gave rise to the ballet school, which later developed into New York City Ballet – one of the most famous dance companies in the world.

Serenade was originally created for the students of the ballet school. This is reflected in the way Balanchine’s choreography draws from the surprising turns of ballet rehearsals, from a student falling over to another one arriving late. Thanks to the choreographer’s particular affinity for Tchaikovsky’s music, the work features his Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48.

Serenade was last in the repertoire of the Finnish National Ballet in 2004. It is performed with the permission of The George Balanchine Trust.

The Concert

The Concert

Jerome Robbins – Frédéric Chopin

A parody of a piano concerto by a world-renowned musical director

The Concert is an experience that will leave no one cold. It is a parody of the audience of a piano concerto, which explores their inner fantasies as they listen to the music. At the same time, it’s an affectionate satire of ballet and its traditions.

During his extensive career, American choreographer and director Jerome Robbins has created choreographies not only for ballet groups but also Broadway musicals, films and television. Robbins was awarded an Oscar for his choreography for the film version of the musical West Side Story.
