Carmen Baltzar

Introduction

Carmen Baltzar is a writer, artist, and film director. Her work is rooted in embodied experience, the intersections of love and power, matriarchal realities, and the life and death of Roma people. Carmen channels and transcribes ancestral knowledge through writing. Her first novel, which delves into the consciousness of the mythical and historical figure of Carmen in the present day, will be published in 2026. She curated and co-edited the anthology Ohi – Writings on Death and What Lies Beside (WSOY 2022), and her prose and poetry have been published by WSOY, S&S, Kosmos, and Kiasma, as well as in online publications such as Al Jazeera, Yle’s Kulttuuricocktail, and Iso Numero. Carmen’s latest short film, All the Love in My Body (Kenno Filmi & Homemade Films), views a Greek beach through the eyes of an eight-year-old Roma girl selling toys to tourists with her older sister. Carmen’s earlier films have been screened at the Tampere Film Festival, Love & Anarchy Festival, Savonlinna Nature Film Festival, and the URB Festival at Kiasma. Her work has received support from the Finnish Film Foundation, the Hellenic Film Commission, the Kone Foundation, and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
As a lover of classical music, Carmen is excited to explore the possibilities of opera as an art form. She is especially looking forward to applying her unique perspective to libretto writing and stage work, and to collaborating with classical musicians and other professionals at the Finnish National Opera.
