synopsis
Through political intrigue, the victorious pirate Simon Boccanegra is elected doge of the city-state of Genoa, despite opposition from his rival, Jacopo Fiesco. The two men share a connection to Maria, Fiesco’s daughter and Boccanegra’s lover who died a long time ago. The daughter she gave Boccanegra, Amelia, has since vanished without a trace.
Twenty-five years later, Amelia resurfaces in Genoa and becomes embroiled in a power struggle that ultimately costs Boccanegra his life.
