No secret is safe forever

The impactful story of Simon Boccanegra invites the audience on a visually refined journey through medieval Italy. This rarely performed opera by Verdi is a sombre and instantly captivating thriller about political power struggles and family secrets across generations.

The impressive creative team behind the current production includes director Pierre Audi and sculptor Anish Kapoor, who has designed the sets. Kapoor recently made international news headlines after he purchased exclusive rights to the world’s “blackest black”. Read the article in Helsingin Sanomat.

Through political intrigue, the victorious pirate Simon Boccanegra is elected doge of the city-state of Genoa, despite opposition from his rival, Jacopo Fiesco. The two men share a connection to Maria, Fiesco’s daughter and Boccanegra’s lover who died a long time ago. The daughter she gave Boccanegra, Amelia, has since vanished without a trace.

Twenty-five years later, Amelia resurfaces in Genoa and becomes embroiled in a power struggle that ultimately costs Boccanegra his life.
